Academy for Sciences and Agriculture - Encourage the Use of Different and Innovative Teaching Method
The Academy for Sciences and Agriculture (AFSA) has revamped its middle school program for the 2017-2018 school year. While moving the middle school into a new location, the AFSA MS staff decided it was a perfect time to explore a new flexible learning environment. They have developed an open-space concept that empowers students to take ownership in their learning, fosters innovation and creativity, and integrates hands-on experiences that directly connect to the interdisciplinary school curriculum. The open-space model is designed to allow for all students and classes to have flexible, mixed-grade level learning groups based on student interest, passions, and specific skill building needs. Some of the key components to the new programming include Innovation Studio, makerspace, choice time, outdoor lab, and meaningful field experiences. The AFSA MS team believes that the new programming and innovative teaching methods foster 21st century skill development for high school and postsecondary success.
